Yearlong celebrations on Kottayam District Hospital’s 200th year

Ambitious projects on anvil

The District Hospital of Kottayam completing legendary 200 years on 21st June 2010. The yearlong celebrations will be inaugurated by Minister for Health and Family Welfare, P. K. Sreemathy at the hospital courtyard.

To acknowledge and appreciate the services rendered by the hospital and the people behind it, the organizers are determined to make the 200th birthday of Kottayam District Hospital a laudable event. As a part of the celebration a meeting of democratic representatives and officials from panchayaths, block-panchayaths, different Govt. departments and volunteer associations is also organized. Different growth oriented activities will also be initiated and executed during this period which includes a budget of 2 crore rupees for medical I.C.U, surgical I.C.U. etc, which will be functional this year.

The inaugural meeting will be chaired by Minister for Revenue. K.P. Rajendran and the hospital modernization project will be inaugurated by opposition leader Oommen Chandy. The inauguration of new corridor will be done by V.N. Vasavan M.L.A. and Jose K. Mani M.P will inaugurate the modified entrance.

The hospital which is a landmark of Kottayam, established in the British epoch and founded by the British Surgeon Dr.Cross in 1811. Started as a small clinic at Dr.Cross’ house, the hospital now occupies a sprawling 9.5 acres

The District Hospital was the first designated centre for Kottayam Medical College with the first MBBS batch admitted here. Subsequently it is transferred to Arpookkara. Thereafter the responsibility of District Hospital was undertaken by the District panchayath. District Hospital has 15 Departments in total with 374 Beds, 2 Wards and Pay-Wards which include 17 rooms. More than 1500 patients are out-patients and 320 in-patients can be admitted and treated simultaneously here.
